Dear friends! Although the Winters nowadays are not even close to those we had when we were younger I wish you all a pleasant season - with or without snow!

Dave I agree with Britta Gudrun. Mother Ursula was very much in the same condition and yet we had a very pleasant final year together. It was helped by the fact that she had a tree outside her window on the first floor.
I made a point of visiting either just before breakfast or at tea time so that she could feel some normality.
I viewed it as being like waiting in an airport departure lounge for the flight to be called. Every visit could be the last and so was special.
Mother Ursula passed away in December 2015 a few hours after we had had breakfast together with her still in bed.
I gave her only a few things to have in her room so as not to confuse her. I also gave the home pictures of her in her twenties (the same age as most of the carers) so that they could see what she had been like at their age.
Hello dear ones,
actually I wanted to pause here today, but I can not leave you, dear Mervi, alone. So, snow and cold are still there but unfortunately without sunshine, because it makes the snow so wonderful.
Dave, to understand your mother's lack of interest, you have to put yourself in her place. When you are old, weak and despondent, at some point you just want to be left alone and not necessarily "entertained". If you can accept that, you will both feel better, believe me, I know what I am talking about. Sometimes a hug or hand holding and petting is worth so much more. We always tend to think any activities are so important to calm our own fears. Just pay attention to what your mom is communicating to you verbally or nonverbally and you'll be on the right track.
Hello friends!
We got the snow in the night. In the morning we walked with our children and Bonny in the forest. Bonny was delighted. Then they drove home.
Patricia
How are you doing?
Dave
I wish you success with the finding a home for your mother.
Another grey sky and -3C day. Today I'll have my Mom over here for lunch and dinner. My neighbour gave me some small puzzles with large pieces for my Mom to try. She used to love puzzles and adult colouring books but doesn't show much interest in them anymore. So we'll see if she wants to try them.
Usually, in the warmer seasons, we would walk my neighbourhood, go to a park or visit the cemetery where her relatives are buried. Winter is not her favourite season, so I try to find things to do indoors, like looking at photo albums or watching a classic movie. She still knows who is who from the golden age of Hollywood.
Mervi, yes the snow remains constant at -0 degrees. Of course Django prefers the warm place on the sofa.
Now I look after your contribution in the KM and wish you an exciting skiing program
Dave, good luck in finding a good home for your mom again.
Good day! Guten Tag! Oh bear, I'm exhausted! I've been already skiing and ski jumping - and there's more to come ....
Britta-Gudrun - Is the ground still white? What luck you have good helping neighbours. Maybe Django is back in the warmth of the house now?
Yeo - I hope you and your husband are doing fine considering the health problems.
Ludmila - I'm sure you had a nice hiking tour.
Dave - My last zoo visit was in Copenhagen 2019! Pandemi and back problems have made it impossible to to anything the requires longer trips. - I wish you and your brother best of luck finding a good home for your mother.
In KM you can admire Hamish and Indie - a mentor and his student - in Pat Waldron's fine photos.
Belated birthday greetings to Ludmila. I hope that you enjoyed your special day with family.
Patricia - I wish you a quick recovery. My brother stopped smoking after his bout with pneumonia 25 years ago.
Mervi - That is a great photo of Knut that you have posted for this thread. I too enjoy watching polar bears play in the snow. My favourite time to visit the zoo is winter. Most animals are more active. I haven't been since Feb.2020 before Covid19 hit us.
It is grey and -3C here in Waterloo. I read in the local news this morning that we have had 2 sunny days in the last 4 weeks. No wonder people seem to be in miserable moods these days.
My brother and I toured 2 LTC homes this week, with 2 more tours set for next week. The philosophy of "aging with grace" has taken over how these homes are set up. They are nothing like what I remember as a child, or even 20 years ago. They no longer segregate dementia/ Alzheimer's residents in secure units and strive to integrate them into "regular' units. I feel better about having my Mom move into one of these LTC homes. The difficult part will be moving her out of the room that she calls home.
My Manitoulin Island friend says that despite a few days of -20C and calm weather, the ice that formed has broken up after high winds the other day. That area relies heavily on winter tourism such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and hiking. A late ice cover, which is usually at least 1m thick by now, is even affecting his work cycle. He has a few construction projects set up for winter work but he can't get to them until the ice is safe. Where he lives, on an island in McGregor Bay, you travel by boat in the spring/summer/fall and snow mobile in the winter. Cars are only used to go into town for groceries, shopping, construction materials, and his son's school or sports. During the winter they move into a cabin on Manitoulin Island. It is a different way of life.
Today I have tackled the usual chores. I'm waiting for the laundry to dry and then I'll get out for a walk to pick up a steak for BBQ tonight.
Oops, a whopping 20cm of snow has fallen here since last night and it looks wonderful. Thank goodness my two neighbors take turns clearing the snow, otherwise I would have to pay a company dearly for it.
I don't know if Django loves the snow, but this morning he already scampered through the garden in big jumps.
Take good care of yourselves and share Hug Day, with the one you love!
Ludmila - Congratulations for being number one on this thread! Uncle Sergej will reward you with a cake baked by none less than Madame Nini! Wonderful - isn't it?
Britta-Gudrun - I hope you're doing fine and enjoying the weekend with Django.
Ralph - I love to see polar bears in the snow and luckily there are many of Knut on the white stuff. - Your mails worked fine!
Today is the International Hug Day so I want to show you some wonderful photos of HUGGING BEARS in KM. You will love them!
Have a cosy Saturday and take care. Because it's weekend there are lots of Winter sports going on so my coach will be my favourite place today.
