Dear friends! Old Man Winter is already planning his retirement and Miss Spring will soon make her entré. However, there's still time to enjoy the snow of this season!

CHILDREN's BOOKs for the little RANUA-VIKING-boy:

http://tinyurl.com/ChildrenBooksForMiniViking

If you click into the 'Auf nach Walhalla kleiner VIKINGER!' cover picture
you get a big copy of this cover, and if you click the right hand arrow
at this this picture, you get to a side where you can scroll down
and get other nice motives to say ' GOOD NIGHT ! '
. . . and that's what I'll do right now ;)

Hallo Ihr Lieben!

Teddybärenvati - Alles Gute zum Namenstag!

Mervi - How are your travel plans coming along?
Will you cover the 1,800 km one-way by car, plane or Bearforce One?

Proud Mamy Venus and little 'Nalle' look so happy and beautiful.
The snow is the bearfect welcome for the little one.

Christine, Knuti-Judi - I hope your shovels and the shovel operators can take a break soon.

The latest photos from Ranua are quite superb.
Seeing Venus and her cub as well as the gorgeous Milana
I can understand what Patricia means. It is indeed true that the Doncaster experiment may not work. It is in any case only intended as a temporary home for young bears like Nobby.

Second snow day in a row here, but the knusband dug out the car so that I can get my message late this afternoon!

Happy Hump day, Alle!

Teddybärenmutti - It's Risto's name today so Venus chose a good day for presenting her son! :D

Patricia - We have often said that a polar bear lady should be white, fluffy and roundish and Milana certainly is all that. In other words a perfectly beautiful lady! :D - I also hope the zoos will think of the possible cubbies when they make plans for a polar bear enclosure. I'm glad that Orsa is patiently waiting although they've been offered to have more polar bears. One day all the space will be needed - at least I hope so!

Good evening Dear All, as usual, I am centuries behind with all postings, reports and pics. But I would like to drop a few words with regard to Milana in Zoo Hannover. She is gorgeous, isn?t she!!!! I do not know what food she got, but she is well-filled, sexy and very lively.
I saw the remarks of some of you in connection with the fear what will happen to Nanuq and Sprinter in the near future. I have been thinking of that. But I have to make some remarks too. Hoping that zoos should better possess of at least of two or three enclosures (one for mother-child, one for the papa and one for the ones waiting to move to another zoo) is wishful thinking, especially because of the financial situation of most zoos worldwide!!! For the simple reason, the money is never there.
In the past, I have read articles where young male polar bears have spent some time together (in Churchill Bay) and filled their days with wrestling and play-fighting before they leave again and go their own ways. But it is not part of their normal life situation.
Having a group of the same gender is a rather new concept in zoos to keep polar bears, but the results on a long-term basis are still unknown. And I really wonder whether it is after all feasible (unless they are all neutered). Polar bears are loners and only in zoos, they are forced to live together. However, males and females meeting and mating is definitely a natural situation.
Knowing how endangered the living circumstances are for polar bears in the wild, especially with regard to their survival, I believe that zoos do have here a responsibility in maintaining the species. And although some may say that only 50% of the babies are surviving in the zoos, we must remember that in the wild, only 10% do survive their 2 first years.
And now, I have to finalize my part for our monthly potluck.

Liebe Ludmila!
