This week's thread is dedicated to a very special lady - our beloved Oma Lisa. The Waiter, Gianna, Flocke, Raspi and all the visitors in the Knuipe wish her all the best and hope the problems she's been having lately will be solved soon. We alos send our best greetings to all the loving zoo keepers in Munich and Berlin.
It's not easy to be a young polar bear but it isn't so easy to be an elderly lady bear either - just read Grandma Lisa's letter which she wrote with a little help from Teddybärenmutti and Caren:

Die richtige Auswahl an Gartengeräten
Eine grosse Auswahl an Gartengeraeten bekommt man in Gaertnereien, in Gartenbaubedarfshandlungen oder im Baumarkt. Einige davon gehoeren zur Grundausstattung, viele jedoch sind unnoetig und lediglich ein Verkaufstrick. Beim Kauf der richtigen Gartengeraete sollte unbedingt der Qualität den Vorzug gegeben werden. Dabei sollte Markenware aus hochwertigem Stahl gekauft werden. Vordem Kauf sollte jedes Gerät einmal in die Hand genommen werden, um seine Handhabung beurteilen zu koennen. Solche Geaete halten bei entsprechender Pflege mehrere Jahre.
Folgende Geräte gelten als Grundausstattung:
Spaten zum Umgraben, Ziehen von Graeben und Stechen der Löcher beim Pflanzen. Dabei sind Standardgroessen am, fuer Ungeuebte und Frauen gibt es auch kleinere Groessen.
Grabgabel (gleiche Groesse wie Spaten aber mit 5 Zinken statt der Klinge) zum Umgraben, Locker der Bodenoberflaeche oder als Harke zum Ebnen. Auch hier sind Standard- und kleinere Groesseen erhaeltlich.
Kelle zum Pflanzen und Hochheben junger Pflanzen und Zwiebeln. Am geeignetsten ist eine Pflanzkelle, deren Klinge an einem L-foermigen Stiel und damit unterhalb des Griffs befestigt ist.
Handrechen zur Kelle, mit mindestens 4 Zinken. Besonders geeignet fuer die Entfernung von Unkraut. Lockerung der Oberfläche oder zum Anlegen von Samenrinnen. Neben der gebraeuchlichen Hacke gibt es solche mit 3 Zinken oder Hacken mit Schneideflaechen, mit denen das Unkraut durch Hin- und Herbewegen abgeschnitten wird.
Rechen oder Harke zum Ebnen des Bodens, besonders vor dem Anlegen Rinnen oder Einsäen von Rasen. Ein Rechen ist auch von unschaetzbaren Wert zur Beseitigung von herabfallenden Blaetter von Blueumen im Herbst.
Heckenschere und Seil sind ebenfalls eine sehr nuetzliche Anschaffung. Ein Seil wird benutzt, um gerade Samenrinnen zu erzielen oder Beete und Randbeete zu gestalten. Mit einer Heckenschere werden Baeume und Straeucher beschnitten

Hallo Teddybärenmutti, du hast sehr lustige deutsche Grammatik gelernt. Die Hochzeitsnacht werde ich demnächst in meine Unterrichtsgestaltung einbauen. Aber Caren hat Recht, dein Deutsch muss man nicht verbessern, sonst verliert es an Charme. Ich freue mich darauf, von dir Finnisch zu lernen.

Hello Mervi, when my Bauzli died 5 years ago, I spent many days crying. I went to a home for animals to have a look at the cats, but it was too early. 3 months later a cat keeper asked me if I would like to have two cats from her breed, and I was happy. Some weeks later she asked me again and gave me another cat. I got a grandma and her two grandchildren. Two months later my mother died and I went to Germany to get her cat. Now I am happy with my four darlings.
You need time, and you will never forget your beloved Miffe. But one day in the future when your sorrow is less strong, perhaps you can go to a home for animals and find another darling.

MERVI - I find the idea of honoring Miffie with other kitten a great idea, any another will substitute the vicking but certainly it will be a new love, a new experience that will help you to calm the pain of the loss.
ANNEMARIE - Thank you for the report, in my trip I did as the man to your side, a lot of times I was to the side to hear the explanations about animals and places, I learned a lot and certainly this mister in your side took advantage of the lessons.
SARSAM - I really hope the kitten has arranged a home... many houses close to my building have several cats that wander for the surroundings, perhaps some neighbor has picked up the small, but... I miss to meet her daily.
KITTY - Unhappily I won't be in Berlin in December, well my body won't be, but the thoughts will be with you. I already felt this excitement of trip previous day... it is so good.... you will have a wonderful time in Berlin with the family, the knutians and Knut/Gio, I already wait for the report and pictures.
K-JUDY - Takes care well, this influenza is quite bad, strengthen your immunity with vitamins, rest and bears (polar and pandas). I wait you are well quickly.
DUMBA - Thank you for the Brazilian music, Almir Satter is one of my favorite singer, and the music talks about the simple beauty of the nature, the translation for the name would be: Way of Bush. But.. excuse the ignorance: what does kitschy mean?

Hallo! All bears and all dear people! Thanks to each and very one of your concern...don't know if I've had piggie or unpiggie flu--just know that I haven't been this sick for a long time....the kids and my staff have been ill...nearly everyone...two kids had piggie flu--very high fevers...we are all taking it a day at a time....hugs all around...I'll have a lot of catching up to do this weekend...sarsam--I'm off to Hartmuth's--thanks so much for the tip! Vielen Dank für die netten Worte zu meinem kleinen Bericht. Natürlich bin ich von Knut überzeugt, dass er sich allmählich an die neue Situation gewöhnen wird. Er ist eben ein ganz besonder Bär. Ich bin schon gespannt auf seinen Geburtstag, bestimmt gibt es dann Fortschritte bei den beiden Bärenkindern zu entdecken.

Als Lehrerin weisst Du sicher, dass wir Lehrerinnen keine schöne Studentinnen sind.
Ich weiss es sehr genau, dass ich viele und komische Fehler mache.
Aber ich finde es so, dass unser lieber Knut und alle seine Eisbärfrfeunden/ -innen knutisch deutsch , nicht gutes deutsch, sprechen und schreiben.
Gerade dies ist SALZ. Komisch. lachen. lächeln. Freude zu machen.
Einmal wollte ich, dass mein Text korrigieren sollte. Es war Knut`s Gedanken ueber sein Papa Thomas Dörflein´s Tot. In solchen Sachen soll nie und niemals
komische Sachen dasein.
Ich wartete mit Freude, Spannung auf die Intensiv Kurs im deutscher Sprache am Anfang December.
Ich will herzlich,liebevoll gegenseitig einige Stunden von Finnisch ordnen.
Neun Jahre studierte ich wöchentlich deutsches Grammatik.
Etwas kann ich noch erinnern.

well, the day after is always not so nice as the day before. Raspi is very exhausted. He did not expect such a great festival at all. He is very proud now to be going to be a big bear since he is TWO. Since yesterday he is calling Frl. Flocke "Baby Flocke" and has read about Wilbär and Ewa who is older than Wilbär. Now he has an eye on Giovanna.

By co-incidence I found this link this very evening, and came also to see the following video withbeautiful people, gorgeous landscapes, seagulls and other birds flying in freedom - voices to get under the skin.
Unfortunately the systemagain doesn't accept the link, so if you are interested, just google at YouTube for
"Jeito de Mato" by Paula Fernandes e Almir Sater
I am not able myself to understand Portuguese. May be the purport is a little kitschy (what do you think, Luisa?) but I think the melody and the voices are just what some need at the moment !?

well I do not know whether the paw issue is a kind of invitation for playing (although it may well be the case) I would more interpret it as watch-out, I am strong. We have to learn polar bear language. Maybe Raspi can help us and be our teacher. Would you also like that?

hab Dank für Deinen schönen Bericht. Auch wenn einem das Mitleid für Knut schwer auf dem Herzen liegt, er benötigt diese Erfahrungen für sein Eisbärenleben. Bei Flocke war es vor einem Jahr ähnlich, nur hatte sie den Vorteil, dass Flocke&Raspi viel jünger waren. Ich denke, solange sie sich nicht ernsthaft bekämpfen und beißen, ist alles gar nicht so schlecht. Es dauert halt und Knuti wird lernen. Er ist so ein kluger Bär.

Sarah - It's possible the same thing happens to us but a the moment it's too soon to think about it. I think the best way to honour Miffe's memory is to give a home to a little kitten.

MERVI -- A warm hug to you from my husband and I. It is our (Knuipian's) pleasure to try to keep you entertained (Viktor = distracted) during this time. You have (and are still) doing so much for us, this is the least we can do for you.
RALPH -- Thank you so much for the translation. Now I know why Hartmuth thanked you for your beautiful words. Truly beautiful. I'm going to print that out for my "Knut file"... Re Knut and Gianna--hihihi--growing up and getting to know BOYS is also a stressful part of life :-)))
VELVET -- I agree with LUDMILA--it would be very interesting to hear about your horses and other beasties. I assume you recovered OK from the fall from your horse a few months ago? No lasting effects?
LUDMILA and CAREN -- About the pawing motion that Lars and Knut do--is it possible that this is an "invitation to play" motion? Remember when TD was with Knut, he (and Knut) quite often made motions like that when they were playing.....?

Good afternoon dear Knuipians!
Just wanted to remind you all that amidst darkness and out of the blue sometimes, happiness can come - remembering the day in October 2008 when I received a text from my boss's wife - saying that she had seen a sign for kittens - I asked her to send a picture back and the resultant pic of little Gus brought us back from the depths. One week later we were driving back into London - Greg had to stop the car because I was sick from the smell of the three kittens - they were truly disgusting! On arrival home, everyone had a bath in some "Johnson's baby bath" and our life was transformed.
We will never forget our boys - in fact their ashes are both in a Chapoutier wooden wine box in my study and I talk to them often.
Burbling on (and now crying, as well), best wishes to all - indeed one never knows what is around the corner ..
