Hello friends! This week's theme is appetite but not just appetite for food and drink. I wish we all have a very healthy appetite for LIFE!

There's also a little story (in English, Auf Deutsch) to go with this theme:

Good Morning Alle!

@sarsam
"Thank you so much for sharing that [beastie-]story--I am smiling (through some tears) too...."
*smile* My pleasure!
You've definitely seen the faded spots on my post where silent tears dropped on the ink, haven't you? But like you even when tears come again when telling of loosing my sweetheart I can smile at the same time in memories of our happy times together.

"Tijo sounds like a very special man-cat--self confident but also loving."
*smileagain* Exactly! That teddycat (as a british shorthair partbred he definitely has some resemblance with a teddybear in shape and in character) is convinced that he's the point around which the world is turning. And because this is fact he hasn't to prove it. So he doesn't fight or show macho manners - he can happily live along and always be soft and friendly and cuddly.
I've never met a cat like him before - so independent, so self confident, so self content and so loving, so cooperative, so sweet, so outgoing at the same time.

@Caren - Pics of Marineland
It looks like a big mess still, doesn't it? But I remember pics of Orsa Polarworld under construction and those were very much alike *shudder*.
Let's wait and see. That German vet - maybe that's the possibility to make connections?

@Knutilda

@Patricia Roberts - "Ewa"
My thoughts were (and are) on Ewa too. Since she was first announced as partner for Knut in Orsa there were some informations about her. If I'm right she was moved around a lot (partly together with one of her brothers) and had some not so nice experiences with older bears. So my only thought was "thank God that bear will have a good home now" when the news came that she was moved to Orsa finally.

Sorry, no beastie-story today. Back to work for me but only till noon (TGIF!) and then weekend starts for me.

Have a nice Friday and an even nicer Weekend!

sarsam,
Thanks for reminding me about little Tai and not wanting to come in at night! Remember the keepers trying to entice him with food on a long pole?! It was so funny. And I nevet saw a mama and her cub play as well as Mei and Tai...adorable! Ah, such fond memories...xo k-j

I remember that in my childhood were no lion or tiger cubs in zoos. There was an opinion that the predator do not breed in captivity. Meanwhile the zoos improved considerably. That?s why the loins and tigers breed in the big enclosures. Now we can think on birth control. The polar bears breed not as effective as the big cats. There is no need for birth control.
Uwe can eat a lot chocolate at once too. He does not say something to me about eating.
We will pack tomorrow. I have no problem if I forget something of clothes. I will get something from my daughter. Uwe has not so simple.

In our region is not much carnival. It would be great if you write us about your party.
El Tigre can go to carnival as bear, it would be no problem with his shape.
Celinne
You made me curious. Where is your post? How are you?
Luisa
How are you, your nephew, Star and Tommy?
Sarah
I miss your stories about your cats

Ludmila - I can eat chocolate like a sandwich. When bernd sees it he always asks "Didn't you get anything to eat today? Are you still hungry?"

What you write about the tigers and lions is indeed an issue of concern. I must admit that I focus very much on the polar bears and the zoos I visit regularly gave me the feeling that they really care well for the bears and also for other animals. The enclosures have enlarged in size and many zoos focus more and more on less species but more space for the animals they have.

Have you already prepared your cases for your trip to USA (apart from the chocolate suitcase?)

How about a hot drink?

Celinne - I am sorry that you lost your posts. Longer posts I prefer to write in word and copy it here. It has happened quite often that suddenly the lappy drove down.
I hope you are well!
Today I saw again pics of Yogi. He seems to be frustrated, I think he is missing Lisa.

Good evening friends!
Mervi
At a pinch I can eat all chocolate in a short while. Thank you for the asking about the day for our meet at knutitis. I wanted to ask too, but I have not done this till now.
Dumba
Thank you for the proposal about sightseeing tour. Unfortunately I do not know when we will come to Berlin and how long we will stay. I wave my paw to you!
Patricia
Why do you always react so hard? I was not in zoo Berlin yesterday. From what I read about cormorant, the bears played it to death. It took about two hours. Therefore I allow the question, why nobody removed the bird. It is only a question and I insist on the right to ask the questions in public zoo. I do not want keepers to jump in the water. There are spoon nets in zoo.
Caren, Sarsam
I spoke sometimes with the keepers in different zoos. They were all the nice people. Otherwise I saw in Hagenbecks in Hamburg too many lions in the not very big enclosure. There are the father lion, the mother, four male kids and a female kid. In zoo Berlin there are two male lions and three female lions. In zoo Braunschweig are all four tiger kids still with the parents.
I found very interesting in book ?Smiling bears? that the male bears were not castrated but sterilized. It does not affect the behavior of animals. They try to breed and are satisfied.
Knuti-judi
I am glad that the panda parents are in USA and are happy together. Maybe you can be happy with the other cub.

Dear Mervi - we would also vote for 4.4., but we're flexible!
Dear Dumba - you are a treasure. We are looking forward to the tour verrrry much! Thank you for this kind offer

Dear knuti-judy - I am sure the restaurants are open! If not, bernd would possibly cancel the trip

Dear Mervi,
I would vote for 4/4 as 4/3 is the only shopping day! However, I am flexible and will go with the majority.
Friday, Sunday and Monday are all holidays that weekend.....hope the restaurants are open!

And, yes, Tai Shan's parents were enjoying a romantic moment when I saw them....they do seem to like each other....however, the zoo relies on artificial insemination as their mating is not to be relied upon! YIKES! xo k-j

Dear friends - I have always made a point that EVERYDODY's entitled to have an opinion here! Please, feel free to write and discuss! The only things I won't tolerate are offending, insulting or hurting each other. I'm counting on that won't be happening here.

My dearest Sarsam, I never ever said that you were disgusting me. Not at all, your opinion was and is always very precious to me since it is coming out of your heart and this heart of yours is filled with a great love for animals. It seems that again I did not express myself in a very diplomatic manner. But since I am reading the comments in various blogs, you would have the same feeliings as me. I hope that we are still friends and most of all, please never shut your mouth about your thoughts and comments. We are learning from each other, isn't it. And most probably, I need your thoughts and comments much more than you will need mine.

Dumba - Thank you so much for sending the link. These two are sooo cute and their parents are a very beautiful couple. We really enjoyed the video!

Sarsam - Thank you for your kind clarification. I agree that birth control in zoos is necessary in those circumstances where there are more animals that the zoos could accomodate. And I think that many zoos who have a high level of responsibility do this (?).
I only have difficulties in believing they breed only for money. In Nuremberg Flocke and Raspi go away (we know the reasons for it) although many visitors come to see particularly them. They keep Vera and Vera needs a partner, she shouldn't be alone for longer. I am convinced that a facility as there is a Funpark Marineland has merely financial interests. I know for sure that Flocke has not been sold and that proves (in my opinion) a lot of sense and responsibility of the zoo management. I think Nuremberg would have kept FloRa to be may be included in one group with Vera (in one or more years of time) but the limiting factor was Raspi's ownership. They definitely cannot accomodate 2 polar bear groups. For that the space is not big enough.I also agree with Mervi's post.
Thank you, Sarsam for taking the time explaining.

Dear Sarsam, on a very quick note, if Knut is ever moved to the big polar bear enclosure, I do not see why there would be any reason to move Tosca. By the time he would become mature, all three ladies would be too old to be covered by him. I know that at a certain moment, this rumour started and was spread around. Sometimes I am really wondering where the brains of these so-called polar bear experts are residing, but one thing is for sure, not in their head!!!!! At this moment, I am getting seriously tired and overly disgusted by all these comments.

ATTENTION ALL BERLIN TRAVELLERS!!!!

Dumba has kindly offered to organize a sightseeing tour for those who are interested and I really hope we all are. Even if we've been in Berlin several times and maybe seen all the 'musts' I'm sure we would see everything with new eyes if we saw it all together. The prize is 18 euros/person - yes, es ist teuer but I'm sure it will be worth the prize.

Please, write here in Knuipe which date you would prefer - the 3rd or the 4th. Let us also know if there's something special you'd like to see. I understood we could have some wishes but of course, we have to stay inside Berlin because the tour last 2-3 hours with a couple of foto stops.

I'm going to ask in Knutitis forum if there's going to be a Knuti meeting at Joe's and the date of that so we don't plan our Knuipe evening on the same day.

Oh dear, all this planning makes me so excited.....For Vesa and me both dates are OK but let the majority decide.

Dumba - Thank you for all your efforts and thank you for the link to the lion cubs. I'm going to watch it now.

Good evening Dear All,
In all honesty, when I looked at the pics of Marineland, the only thing I can see is that it is giving me the feeling that this enclosure will not be ready before April or so. It is still one big wharf and furthermore, it doesn?t give me any idea of the final outcome. But according to what I once read about the plans, they are actually doing their very best to create a good place for polar bears. I also think that the biggest problem with the coming move of Flocke and Raspi is laying in the fact that it is not so nearby. If this kind of world would have been created in a German vacation park, it might have been more acceptable. And although Raspi was really sold to them, the fact that Flocke will forever remain the property of Nuremberg and that Zoo Nuremberg agreed to keep the two together because of their well-being is for me a consolation and for Antibes an obligation to take good care of the two. And remember, sometimes, miracles do happen. When Wilbar moved to Orsa, most were fearing that it would get hard to have updates about him. And this may sound not very nice, but in the end, nobody was asking about the future of Ewa and her happiness there. And what happened, Mervi went once and there the relationship and the link were built and now we enjoy all the news about the TWO !!! Anyway, I am still counting on the assistance of Marina to keep us informed.
With respect to the sad story of the cormorant, Mrs. Weckert made attempts to save the bird. And we all must bear in mind that the enclosure of the young bears is at this moment very icy and dangerous. Polar bears can manage to walk and play there, but for a human being, broken legs are guaranteed. And even though some may say that it might have been easy to call the bears inside, we must respect that these bears are no toys that can be moved and removed at humans? wishes. Giovanna has reacted in the only way a polar bear would react and she killed the bird. And nobody can blame her for being normal. And frankly, if I am allowed to say so, in my opinion, all the other reactions were exaggerated. After all, the only animal that did not act and react in a normal manner was Knut.
With respect to the so-called with the breeding of young animals to attract visitors and as such income, if we only take the example of the polar bear and Germany, it seems that at this moment, the good times are over: in December 2006, Knut was born and survived (although his twin brother died after 4 days), in December 2007, Flocke and Wilbar were born and survived, in December or so 2008, Milak was born and survived (and again, the other one died). And since then, no success. Of course, some animals do have offspring easier than others, which make it or not. But is this really a token that zoos in general only breed for money???? I have serious doubts.
I wish you all the best because I do not know whether I will have the possibility to come during the coming days.
